Spear’s: Police wait times pose risk to rural estates, security experts say
‘How secure is the entirety of your estate if your wine fridge can be compromised and an attacker can move laterally on the network?’
Lucy Burnford comments in Spear’s Magazine on the vulnerabilities facing rural properties.
Most estates and large private residences rely on a complex mix of security systems, connectivity, smart home technology and IoT devices. Yet, these environments are rarely reviewed through a single, overarching cyber risk lens.
In many cases, individual systems have been implemented by different providers over time, meaning no one person or company has full visibility or ownership of the combined risk. Gaps can quietly appear between systems – and those gaps are where vulnerabilities tend to emerge.
Rural properties face an added challenge. Limited or inconsistent connectivity can become a real risk if security systems depend on the network to function correctly, or if remote access is relied upon to monitor and manage the home.
We encourage our clients to look at their property as a whole from a digital privacy perspective. By reviewing everything together, risks can be identified early and mitigated thoughtfully, ensuring your home is as resilient, discreet and dependable as it should be.
